YouTube video ideas for beginners
Your first videos are practice as much as content. The best beginner ideas are ones you can make with what you already know, in a few hours, and that someone is already searching for. Don't wait for the perfect idea: ten finished videos teach you more than one planned for months.
Good first videos for a new channel:
- A useful first video instead of a trailer: answer the one question your audience asks most, in under 5 minutes.
- Something you learned recently, explained step by step. You still remember what was confusing, which is exactly what a beginner viewer needs.
- The mistakes you made when you started with your topic. Honest, easy to script and already shaped like a list.
- A question people really ask, in their own words: take it from the suggestions in YouTube's search box, from forums or from comments.
- The basics of your niche for complete beginners: the five terms or steps everyone needs first.
- A comparison people make before deciding: two tools, two methods or two options, and when each one makes sense.
- A 1-minute Short of any of these, to see which topic pulls viewers in before you make the long version.
Nine video formats that turn a topic into an idea
A topic ("personal finance") is not yet an idea. A format gives it a promise the viewer understands from the title. These work for long videos and Shorts, on camera or without a face, in any niche.
How-to
"How to build an emergency fund". The viewer leaves able to do something. Keep the steps in the order they'd follow them and show the result early.
Mistakes to avoid
"5 pricing mistakes small businesses make". People click to check they aren't making them. Each mistake needs its fix, or the video only worries them.
Myth vs truth
"Budgeting myths that make people give up". It works when the myth is something your audience really believes. State it fairly before you correct it.
X vs Y
"Debit card vs credit card". A comparison answers a decision people are already facing. End with who should choose each one, not a winner for everybody.
Explainer
"How a plane stays in the air" or "…explained in 3 minutes". One question, answered clearly. A drawing that builds up while the voice explains does a lot of the work.
Story or case study
"The race to the South Pole, told as a story". A person, a goal and an obstacle keep people watching longer than a list of facts, in history, business or science.
List
"5 inventions discovered by accident". Easy to promise and easy to follow. Put a strong item first and keep the best one for the end, so people stay.
What if…?
"What would happen if the Moon disappeared?". Curiosity does the clicking. Keep it grounded: explain the real science or history behind the answer.
From zero
"How to write a business plan from zero". For complete beginners, with no jargon. It answers a search that doesn't go out of date, so it can keep finding viewers.
YouTube video title ideas: 8 formulas for any niche
Once you have the idea, the title is what gets the click. These formulas match the formats above; fill in the brackets with your topic.
| Formula | Example | Works for |
|---|---|---|
| How to [result] (without [obstacle]) | How to save your first $1,000 without a budgeting app | How-to videos and tutorials |
| Why [surprising fact] | Why planes don't fly in a straight line | Explainers |
| [Number] [things] that [result] | 5 habits that make mornings easier | Lists |
| [A] vs [B]: [what really changes] | Renting vs buying: what really changes | Comparisons |
| What would happen if [situation]? | What would happen if everyone stopped using cash? | What if |
| [Topic] explained in [time] | Inflation explained in 3 minutes | Explainers and Shorts |
| The biggest [myth or mistake] about [topic] | The biggest myth about learning a language | Myth vs truth, mistakes |
| How [person or company] [achieved something] | How a tiny shop beat a supermarket chain | Stories and case studies |
Put the words people search near the start and keep the title to about 60 characters, so it isn't cut off in search results or on a phone. Promise only what the video delivers.
How to check a YouTube video idea before you make it
A video that nobody watches often started as an idea that nobody checked. Testing one takes a few minutes and needs little more than YouTube's own search box. Do it before you write a word of the script.
None of these checks guarantees views, and an idea that fails one of them isn't necessarily bad. They tell you whether people are looking for the topic, what they already have, and what your video would add.
- Say it in one sentence: who it's for and what they'll know by the end. If you need two sentences, you probably have two videos.
- Search the title on YouTube. Several recent videos about it from different channels mean people watch this topic. A video with far more views than its channel has subscribers is a sign the topic itself pulls viewers in.
- Type the first words into YouTube's search box and read the suggestions: they are searches people make, in their own words. Google Trends, with "YouTube Search" selected, shows whether interest is growing, steady or seasonal.
- Find your angle. Watch the top three results and note what they skip, explain badly or never show. Your video is the one that fills that gap: a simpler example, a story, a drawing that makes it click.
- Check that it fills the length. Write the three points it covers. If you can't find three, make it a Short; if you find ten, make it a series.
- Write the title and the first sentence before the script. If that opening line wouldn't keep you watching, change the idea rather than the editing.
- Ask whether it leads somewhere. An idea that suggests five more is worth more to a channel than a one-off.
From a video idea to a finished video with our AI
The ideas above work with any tool. If you don't want to film, record or draw, this is how one becomes a whiteboard or illustrated story video in AnimatedBoard.
Pick an idea
Click "Create this video free" on the idea you like. You create a free account and the idea arrives in New video with its title, topic and points.
Get the script, or write your own
Our AI drafts the script from the idea at the length you choose, from 1 to 15 minutes, and you read and edit it before anything is drawn. If you'd rather write it yourself, paste your script and the video says exactly what you wrote. Writing a script costs no minutes.
Choose the look and the voice
A whiteboard video, where a hand draws each scene, or an illustrated story, in one of 19 looks. Voices narrate in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese; the free account uses one English voice and one Spanish voice.
Let the scenes be drawn and voiced
Our AI splits the script into scenes, draws each one and records the narration in sync with the drawing. You can change any scene before you put the video together.
Download the MP4
A Full HD video with .srt and .vtt caption files for YouTube. The free account covers one 1-minute video, once; longer videos and more of them use the minutes of a plan.
In the app: the full Video ideas tool
Create a free account and the generator becomes a tool for your own channel. Getting ideas there doesn't spend video minutes.
Your channel, written once
Describe what the channel is about, who it's for and its tone, plus the language and the type of video. It's saved, so every new batch of ideas starts from it.
Ideas from your own videos
Our AI reads the titles of the videos you've already made and suggests what could come next for the same audience.

Frequently asked questions
Is the YouTube video ideas generator free?
Yes. You can use it without an account twice a day from the same connection. Each request gives you three ideas, and "3 more ideas" gives you three new ones. With a free account you get more ideas every day in the app.
Do I need an account to get video ideas?
No. You only need a free account to save your channel, get ideas based on your own videos, turn an idea into a series or make the video itself.
What does each idea include?
A title, an opening line to hook the viewer, the three points the video covers, a suggested length in minutes and a short explanation of why it works. "More ideas" never repeats the ones already on screen.
Does it work for YouTube Shorts, Reels and TikTok?
Yes. Choose "Short, Reel or TikTok" and you get 1-minute ideas, with an opening line written for the first seconds, when viewers decide whether to keep watching.
In which languages does it give ideas?
On this page the generator answers in English; on the Spanish version of the page, in Spanish. In the app, videos can be narrated in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese; the free account narrates in English and Spanish.
What are good YouTube video ideas for beginners?
Topics you already know, that someone is searching for and that you can finish in a few hours: a step-by-step guide to the basics, the mistakes you made when you started, an answer to a common question or a comparison. You'll find seven first-video ideas above and a checklist to test any idea before you make it.
Does it suggest YouTube video titles too?
Yes. Every idea comes with a title you can use or rewrite, plus the opening line that goes with it. Above you'll also find eight title formulas, with examples, that work in any niche.
Is it good for faceless YouTube channels?
Yes. The ideas are written for narrated videos, so they work without a camera or a presenter. You can make them as whiteboard or illustrated story videos with an AI voice, or record the narration yourself.
Can I use the ideas on my channel, even if it's monetized?
Yes, they're yours to use however you like, without credit. Other people may get similar ideas for similar topics, so search the title on YouTube and give it your own angle before you publish.
How is it different from asking ChatGPT for video ideas?
It's made for video only: you don't write a prompt, and every idea comes with a hook, three points and a length that fits the format you chose. One click takes the idea into making the video, with the script, scenes and voice.
