YouTube video length

How long should a YouTube video be? The ideal length by video type

A YouTube video should be as long as its content needs and not a minute more: YouTube says it wants both short and long videos to succeed, and its ranking looks at how long, and how much, of each video people watch. As a guide, a Short runs up to 3 minutes, a product explainer 1 to 2, a tutorial 3 to 10 and an in-depth lesson or video essay 6 to 20. The one length that changes your earnings is 8 minutes, from which a monetized video can carry mid-roll ads.

Ideal YouTube video length by type of video

Guidance, not rules: typical ranges for videos that keep people watching to the end. YouTube publishes no ideal length, and a video that genuinely needs 14 minutes should take 14.

Type of videoTypical lengthWhy this range
YouTube Short15–60 seconds (3 minutes maximum)Viewers swipe. One idea with a payoff near the end holds them; a longer Short needs a reason to stay.
Product or marketing explainer60–120 secondsProblem, product, how it works, call to action. Every extra sentence has to earn its place.
Tutorial or how-to3–10 minutesSet by the number of steps. People jump to the step they need, so chapters help.
Educational explainer or lesson6–15 minutesOne concept, with examples. Past 15 minutes, a series of shorter videos is usually easier to follow.
Video essay or commentary10–20 minutesAn argument needs room for evidence and counterpoints, and the viewer chose to go deep.
Documentary or story15 minutes and upA narrative can hold long watch time if each chapter opens a new question.

These ranges are editorial guidance based on common practice, not YouTube rules. Your own audience retention report is the better guide for your channel.

Why retention matters more than length

There is no length bonus on YouTube. Its help centre puts it plainly: "we want both short and long videos to succeed", and it encourages creators to make each video the appropriate length for its content. What the discovery system does look at is watch time, measured two ways: absolute (how many minutes people watched) and relative (what share of the video they watched). According to YouTube's help centre, relative watch time matters more for short videos and absolute watch time for longer ones, and both average view duration and average percentage viewed inform ranking.

That is why padding backfires. Stretching a 5-minute idea to 10 minutes rarely doubles the minutes watched; the extra minutes tend to be where people leave, and the share viewed drops. A longer video pays off when it holds attention for longer, which usually means it has more to say, not more words to say it with.

The practical test is your own data. The audience retention chart in YouTube Studio shows the moment viewers leave: a sharp drop in the first seconds points at the intro, and a slow slide in the middle points at repetition. Write the next script for the chart, not for a target number.

Best YouTube video length for monetization: the 8-minute mark

Monetized videos that are 8 minutes or longer can carry mid-roll ads, which play during the video instead of only before or after it. YouTube's help centre explains that automatic mid-roll slots are selected by default, that its systems look for natural breakpoints, and that an ad slot is not guaranteed to serve an ad. Slots at a pause in the audio or a change of scene are more likely to serve one, because YouTube generally sees higher viewer retention at those points.

The trade-off is simple. An 8-minute video with mid-rolls can earn more per view than a 6-minute one, but only if people stay. A video stretched just to cross the line loses viewers in the filler, and fewer minutes watched means fewer recommendations. Cross 8 minutes when the topic genuinely has 8 minutes in it; otherwise, make the tighter video.

Length doesn't decide whether you can join the YouTube Partner Program; your audience does. YouTube's help centre lists two routes to ad revenue sharing: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts feed don't count towards the 4,000.

How long should an explainer video be?

For a product or service explainer, the kind that sits on a homepage or a landing page, 60 to 120 seconds is the common guidance. That is long enough for the problem, the product, how it works and a call to action, and short enough that people watch it through before deciding. At the pace of our American English AI voices, about 160 words a minute, it means 160 to 320 words of script.

An explainer on YouTube is a different case. Someone who searches "how does compound interest work" chose to learn, and a 6 to 12-minute explainer with worked examples is normal there. The rule is the same in both: one question per video, answered completely, with nothing that doesn't serve the answer.

Whiteboard and doodle explainers follow the same lengths. The hand draws each element as it is named, so a tight script also means a board that never sits still.

How many words each video length needs

Measured on our AI voices: about 160 words a minute in American English, 140 in British English, 163 in Spain Spanish and 160 in Latin American Spanish. A human narrator varies, so time yourself reading one paragraph.

Video lengthUS English voiceBritish English voiceSpain Spanish voiceLatin American Spanish voice
60 seconds160 words140 words163 words160 words
2 minutes320 words280 words326 words320 words

10 minutes1,600 words1,400 words1,630 words1,600 words
15 minutes2,400 words2,100 words2,445 words2,400 words

The accent changes the pace as much as the language: the same English script runs about 14% longer with a British voice. For any other length, or your own pace, use the script length calculator linked below.

How to choose the length of your next video

A five-step routine that starts from the content, not from a target number.

  1. Write down the one question the video answers

If you can't say it in one sentence, you have two videos. The question sets the scope, and the scope sets the length.

  2. Pick the format first

A Short (vertical, up to 3 minutes), a focused explainer or a long-form deep dive. Each one has its own range in the table above.

  3. Write the script to the answer, then stop

Draft everything the answer needs. Then cut the warm-up intro, the repeated points and any sentence a viewer could skip without missing anything.

  4. Convert words to minutes

Divide the word count by the narrator's pace. If the result lands just under 8 minutes and you monetize, check whether the topic has a genuine extra point before stretching it.

  5. Publish, then read the retention chart

Where viewers leave tells you whether the next video should be shorter, faster at the start or split into parts.

How video length works in AnimatedBoard

If you start from an idea, you choose the length before anything is written: 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Our AI drafts a script for that length, within about 5%, and you edit it; from then on it's your script. If you paste your own script, the video lasts as long as your words take to read at the voice's pace, so the table above tells you roughly what to expect. Writing and splitting into scenes are free: minutes are spent when the drawings and the voice are generated, counted by the second of video.

Each video can run up to 15 minutes, with up to 60 scenes; a long video gets longer scenes, not more of them. By default our AI adds a 3 to 5-second closing scene that sums up the topic and says goodbye (you can switch it off), and the last frame holds for 1.5 seconds before fading out. For a Short, choose 9:16 when you create the project and the video renders at 1080×1920.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a YouTube video be to be monetized?

There is no minimum length for monetization: joining the YouTube Partner Program depends on subscribers plus watch hours or Shorts views, not on how long each video is. Length matters for mid-roll ads, which monetized videos can carry from 8 minutes. Shorter videos can still show ads before or after they play.

What is the ideal YouTube video length in 2026?

There isn't one number. As guidance: Shorts up to 3 minutes, product explainers 1 to 2 minutes, tutorials 3 to 10, lessons 6 to 15, and video essays or documentaries longer. YouTube says it wants short and long videos to succeed, so the right length is the shortest one that fully answers the video's question.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes. According to YouTube's help centre, square or vertical videos of up to 3 minutes uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 are categorised as Shorts. A 3-minute Short needs about 480 words of script at 160 words a minute.

Are longer YouTube videos better for the algorithm?

Not by themselves. YouTube uses both absolute watch time and relative watch time (the share of the video watched), and says relative watch time matters more for short videos and absolute watch time for longer ones. A long video only helps if people keep watching it.

Why can't I upload a video longer than 15 minutes?

Fifteen minutes is YouTube's default upload limit. Verified accounts can upload longer videos, up to 12 hours or 256 GB, whichever is less.

How long should an explainer video be?

For a product or marketing explainer, 60 to 120 seconds is the common guidance, about 160 to 320 words of script at 160 words a minute. Educational explainers on YouTube usually run longer, often 6 to 12 minutes, because the viewer came to learn.

How many words is a 10-minute YouTube video?

About 1,600 words with an American English AI voice at 160 words a minute, and 1,400 with a British one at 140. If you record it yourself, read one paragraph aloud, time it and scale up: your own pace is the one that counts.
